The new Daniel Roth 8-Day Tourbillon with Perpetual Calendar

One of Daniel Roth’s signature models is its 8-Day tourbillon, which is designed and manufactured in-house.     Daniel Roth’s simplest perpetual calendar model, if it can be called that, is the perpetual calendar with moon phase, shown below; the other Daniel Roth perpetual calendars have added complications like equation of time, stopwatch or tourbillon.     This year Daniel Roth has combined both the 8-Day tourbillon and the perpetual calendar to create a un...

A look at the stunning new Daniel Roth Athys II...

The Athys II is the Daniel Roth’s entry level timepiece and is available in white or rose gold. It is large and flat - 42 mm wide, 44 mm and 6.2 mm thick - giving it an elegant profile on the wrist. Previously it was only available with a lacquered enamel dial in discreet white.    At Basel 2008 Daniel Roth gave the Athys II a black dial with matching Roman numerals and hands. Admittedly, nothing extraordinary has been done - the dial colour has changed and that’s all. But the new b...

PuristSPro's official Daniel Roth dinner event in NYC on Wed June 19, 2008 was held at Fiamma located in SoHo on Sullivan Street.  Fiamma is a discreet upscale Italian restaurant which is one of the few Italian restaurants in NYC to receive a 3-star rating from the New York Times.   We had the entire third floor private dining room booked for this elegant and special event - "Masterpieces in the Art of Watchmaking".    Picture from the menu Our last Daniel Roth even...

A review of the Daniel Roth Papillon Chronograph

The Papillon chronograph is a large watch - 43 mm by 46 mm, 15.5 mm high and weighing in at over 200 g - which puts it into Panerai and Royal Oak Offshore territory. The only nit I have to pick about its dimensions is its thickness. I do wish it was marginally slimmer, but its height is a consequence of the movement, because of the dial-side modifications done for the jump hour and minute hands... Daniel Roth Instantaneous Perpetual Calendar "On-the-Wrist" Review

Anyone who’s in the market for a perpetual calendar or an elegant dress watch, you might want to consider the Daniel Roth Instantaneous Perpetual Calendar.  Available in either white gold, pink gold, or platinum (and also each variant available with diamond bezel), I have nothing but unbridled enthusiasm for this rarely seen perpetual, a true work of art if I may say so, and I hope my brief “on-the-wrist” review will garner more interest for this underappreciated timepiece. &nbs...

A butterfly landed on my desk.....

Having been launched at Basel earlier this year, this is the first time the Papillon Chronograph is being seen outside of the Basel fairs. This is the most significant Daniel Roth of late because it plugs an important hole in the collection. It can be the flagship chronograph for the brand, like the Datograph is for Lange and the Royal Oak Offshore for Audemars Piguet; a flagship chronograph is important because chronographs are inordinately popular and they tend to be more accessible than the ...

Photo Essay - Daniel Roth Chronomax in white gold

Based on a Frederic Piguet 1185, the Chronomax features an unusual torque indicator which displays the quality of the remain power reserve, as opposed to the quantity displayed by an ordinary power reserve indicator. This function is most well known in its use by Renaud et Papi in its movements for Richard Mille and Audemars Piguet.  Click here the rest of the photos. - SJX ...

What does it take to create a million dollar watch?

A Look at the Grande Sonnerie of Daniel Roth By Su JiaXian   The Gérald Genta Grande Sonnerie was conceived nearly 20 years ago. At the time, the Gérald Genta brand was arguably the most avante garde watchmaker in the world - independent watchmakers as we know them today did not exist - responsible for a host of revolutionary complications complemented by an exotic array of dial and case materials like lapis lazuli and even yttrium (which dissolves in water and didn’t quite work ...

A Short Guide to Striking Watches

A Concise Guide to Striking Watches   By Su JiaXian   Daniel Roth offers an impressive line of high complications - including four different tourbillon calibres - an achievement few companies can claim. The company also makes (yes, in-house at Le Sentier) a minute repeater and a grande sonnerie. No repertoire of complications would be complete without such watches that chime out the time with small hammers and gongs.   Striking watches are regarded as one of the most challengi...

A visit to Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta in Le Sentier(c)12.2007,  Donald W. Corson   Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta are young brands, high end brands and brands that revel in complications.  To support their growth inside the Bulgari Group they have just completed the construction of a new modern factory building directly adjacent to their previous building which hails from 1905 (granite stairs, wrought iron railings, solid oak doors, built to last forever).  With the n...

Modem burner - The 8-Days tourbillon in platinum

The new watches unveiled at Baselworld have gotten everyone's attention. There are watches already in the collection that are equally deserving of attention, like this 8-days tourbillon in platinum, which just arrived at an authorised dealer yesterday. This is the first time I handled this particular model in platinum, previously I had only seen it in rose gold and white gold. The heft and sheen of the platinum is incredible, and the perfectly finished tourbillon and its three-pronged seconds h...

The perfect watch for everyday wear?

Daniel Roth is known for its complications - grande sonneries, tourbillons, perpetual calendars and more. Another trademark DR watch is a Papillon with its unconventional time display. At the other end of the spectrum lie the simple wristwatches, exemplified by the Athys series. It began with the Athys I in 2005, a time-only, handwound watch sporting a beautifully engraved, vintage IWC pocketwatch movement. Only 35 of the Athys I were made, and despite the price (retail...

E = 9.87sin2B - 7.53cosB - 1.5sinB... A look at the Equation of Time perpetual

The equation of time is the difference between apparent time, what you see on a watch, and solar time, the actual length of a day based on the earth's orbit around the sun. Throughout the year, the equation of time (apparent time minus solar time) ranges from about -14 minutes on 11 February to +16 minutes on 3 November.  Only on 15 April, 14 June, 1 September and 24 December is the day exactly 24 hours long. There are two reasons for that. One is because of the earth's e...
